The Election Commission is making all necessary preparations to hold national elections in December, with no other electoral plans currently in focus, said Election Commissioner Abul Fazul Md Sanaullah. On Tuesday (February 11), the AMM Nasir Uddin-led EC held a two-hour meeting at the Election Building with ambassadors from 18 development partner countries, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).Speaking to journalists after the meeting, EC Sanaullah iterated the Chief Adviser’s statement from December 16, saying: "If elections are to be held with minimal reforms and political consensus, they will take place by December this year. If more extensive reforms are needed, elections may be held by June 2026."Regarding the EC’s preparations, Sanaullah emphasised that their primary focus remains on national elections: "Our position remains unchanged—we have been preparing since December. We do not have separate preparations, only one: the national elections."
When asked about local government elections before the national polls, Sanaullah said the EC would consider the feasibility if the government made such a request.
However, he noted that conducting five-tier local elections typically takes about a year, making it challenging to set a definitive timeline.
"Not all local government institutions have become inactive, but some have. The government will assess the time available and decide whether national elections can proceed within the desired timeframe," he explained.
The EC is also monitoring any potential disruptions to the national elections. According to Sanaullah, the government will determine the extent and timing of local elections, and only then can the EC assess their impact on national elections.
