7 more children die in 24hrs as Bangladesh measles toll hits 601

The death toll from confirmed and suspected measles cases in Bangladesh has crossed 600, after seven more children died in the last 24 hours, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).In its regular measles bulletin issued on Wednesday, the DGHS said the total number of deaths since March 15 has risen to 601.Of the total fatalities, 90 children died from confirmed measles infections, while 511 others died after showing symptoms of the highly contagious disease.

Dhaka division recorded the highest number of symptomatic deaths at 210, followed by Rajshahi division with 85 fatalities.

The DGHS also reported 55 new confirmed measles cases during the past 24 hours.

Over the same period, 1,210 people with measles-like symptoms sought treatment at hospitals nationwide, including 1,055 who were admitted.

Hospitals in the capital recorded the highest number of admissions, with 384 symptomatic patients, while Rangpur division reported the lowest at 18.

With the latest figures, the total number of suspected measles cases in the country has climbed to 74,572, while the number of confirmed infections stands at 9,191, the bulletin added.
