Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Asif Nazrul announced on Tuesday (February 11) that verdicts in three to four high-profile cases related to the July massacre are expected by October. These cases involve former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, top Awami League leaders, and senior police and administrative officials.  Speaking at a press briefing at the Secretariat, Asif addressed public concerns about the progress of the trials, particularly at the International Crimes Tribunal. "Many people express dissatisfaction, saying there is no visible progress in the cases related to the July massacre. However, since the amendment of the International Crimes Tribunal Act and the formation of the International Crimes Tribunal, significant progress has been made," he said.

The International Crimes Tribunal, which began its operations four months ago, has received over 300 complaints. Of these, the prosecution team has formally filed 16 cases after thorough scrutiny.

Asif said, "We expect the investigation of four of these 16 cases to be completed this month. After that, the formal trial will begin with the filing of charge sheets. Defence lawyers will be given three weeks to prepare, and the process of taking testimony will start in April, after Eid."

He expressed confidence that verdicts in three to four cases would be delivered by October, given the court's continuous hearings. "The accused in these cases include top Awami League leaders, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, as well as senior police and administrative officials," he added.

Asif highlighted the efficiency of the current trials compared to previous ones. "Under Sheikh Hasina's tenure, trials for Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP leaders took an average of two and a half years. Here, we aim to complete the process in less than half that time."

He credited the dedication of the prosecution and investigation teams for the expedited process. "Our teams are working day and night, and the trials are based on recent events with substantial evidence, which allows for faster proceedings."

While Asif refrained from commenting officially on specific reports, he noted that their findings would contribute to making the investigation and trial process more transparent and widely acceptable.
