Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Saturday called on the government to consider banning the Awami League, citing a UN fact-finding committee's report that allegedly classifies activities during the party’s rule as crimes against humanity. In a statement, Shafiqur Rahman claimed that the UN report stands as documented evidence of genocide, urging the interim government to ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice."The people believe that the Awami League, guilty of genocide, has no right to do politics in this country. In line with this public demand, we urge the interim government to consider banning the party," he stated. He also praised the UN High Commission on Human Rights, asserting that the report has exposed the truth about the alleged genocide to the world.Shafiqur Rahman further said, "The brutal genocide carried out by the fascist Sheikh Hasina from July 1 to August 5 last year to cling to power has now been recognised by the UN investigation. This report has unveiled the identities of the killers and masterminds behind these crimes."
On behalf of Jamaat-e-Islami, he expressed "sincere gratitude" to the UN High Commission on Human Rights for what he described as "revealing the truth".He alleged that under Sheikh Hasina’s orders, the country witnessed disappearances, gruesome atrocities, and mass killings, with bodies being burned. He further accused the government of destroying democracy and constitutional institutions, claiming that citizens were subjected to brutal torture in “Aynaghar”.
